Joseph Farwell Glidden's invention of one of the most widely-used types of barbed wire in 1873 helped change the history of the American West and had far-reaching impact throughout the world. His Homestead in DeKalb, IL, is being preserved and restored by a not-for-profit organization founded in 1995. Both the home and the barn are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Blacksmith Shop Volunteer

We welcome anyone wanting to learn the art of blacksmithing! Come create hand-forged items from candleholders and pendants to decorative hangers and turtles. You’ll show your skills to our visitors and teach them about the forge.

To become a blacksmith volunteer, you will have to attend a 4 hour class with our lead blacksmith Marty, which does have a fee of $75.

We ask that you can be available on at least one Sunday a month from 12-4 pm, and at Glidden events during the year.
