Spring into some good news!
Larger-than-life Annie comes to the Homestead
Hello, Annie Glidden! You may know the road, but have you ever seen this unique take on Joseph Glidden's niece? Local artist Marty Gniech (pictured) has brought her to life, and she's currently on loan to the museum for public viewing.
Marty was seeking inspiration last summer as Corn Fest approached, looking for something that's important to DeKalb and more meaningful than just an image of corn. He loves the First Street mural that depicts Annie Glidden, and after learning some history alongside Jubilee Artisans owner Christy Andrews, he said he was "compelled" by Annie's story. Annie (1865-1962) was an innovative farmer who was beloved by the community.
The downtown mural depicts an older Annie, and Marty wanted to share a younger image of her that another generation could relate to, so he moved forward with this unique take. Just in time for #WomensHistoryMonth, we are excited to display this larger-than-life Annie here at the Homestead. Come see it on Sundays and learn more about Annie's deep history and agricultural roots here in DeKalb. We'll be sharing more about Annie on our social media this spring and summer, too.
